Sunday 17th May

Welcome! to Self-Guided Worship from Grace Community Church in Kyle of Lochalsh (International Presbyterian Church.) “Self-Guided” means you, and any family members who are with you, will read the scriptures and form and pray the prayers. Click on the links for the hymns, both the music and words will be there. Click on the YouTube link for the sermon. This is our ninth week at this; we are striving to provide you each week with a worship service that enables you to enter behind the curtain into the presence of our Holy God as we worship apart from each other during this global virus crisis. Remember, CHURCH is the people.

This week we continue a seven-week sermon series from Hebrews 11. This week’s sermon is titled “The ‘by faith’ family tree, multi-generational discipleship in a Stay-At-Home world.” I switched from lockdown to “Stay At Home” because that is the call to the people. We look at four generations who lived and died by faith. They knew the LORD would keep his word, his promise to be their God. As we live with social-isolation and distancing, our faith can be tried and wounded, but strengthened. In these weeks apart pray for each other. Connect with each other when you call, text, email, or Zoom with each other. Faith in Lockdown, chosen as the series title, acknowledges that life is different and, for some, seemly uncontrollable. This week we look at a “by faith” multi-generational family, Abraham through Joseph and two sons. It is story of promise and blessings that we share in our Stay-At Home life.

Song of Preparation How Much I Owe

This hymn is from one written by the Scottish pastor, Robert Murray McCheyne, in about 1837. I am including the words here because the version I have chosen, while an upbeat tune, is not easily understood.

When I stand before the throne,

dressed in beauty not my own,

when I see thee as thou art,

love thee with unsinning heart,

then, Lord, shall I fully know,

not till then, how much I owe.

When the praise of heav’n I hear,

loud as thunders to the ear,

loud as many waters’ noise,

sweet as harp’s melodious voice

then, Lord, shall I fully know,

not till then, how much I owe.

Chosen not for good in me,

wakened up from wrath to flee,

hidden in the Savior’s side,

by the Spirit sanctified,

then, Lord, shall I fully know,

not till then, how much I owe.

Teach me, Lord, on earth to show,

by my love, how much I owe.

Call to Worship Psalm 149

Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly! Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King! Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre! For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands, to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, to execute on them the judgement written! This is honour for all his godly ones. Praise the LORD!

Hymn Psalm 149

  • Give Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
  • Thank God that we can come into his presence because of the shed blood of Jesus, the Lamb of God, the Great High Priest
  • Give thanks that in the time of this pandemic, we can join the global church and our sister churches here in the Highlands before the throne of Grace.

Confession to Sin: From Deuteronomy 30:15-20

15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. 16 If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you today, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, 20 loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

Prayers of Repentance: Private prayers where we turn from sin to Jesus Christ

Assurance of Pardon: From Revelation 1:4b-7

4b Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Hymn ~ Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me

Sermon Scripture: Hebrews 11:17-22

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. 20 By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. 21 By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.

Hymn & Doxology: For All the Saints

Benediction Numbers 6:22-27

22 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,

24 The LORD bless you and keep you;

25 the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;

26 the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

27 “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”
